Zynga is plowing new ground with "Hidden Chronicles," a game it has launched on Facebook. Zynga is touting it as its first social hidden object game, and indeed, it is a departure from the 'Ville model that made the company famous. It invites players to uncover hidden objects, solve puzzles, and unlock mysteries. There is a heavy emphasis on the social element, with players able to help friends advance and challenge each other by finding as many objects as possible in 60 seconds. As players progress through the game, they rack up completed quests and earn coins, thus unlocking new scenes.

Are we about to see the demise of the game console? It's hard to believe the days of Sony's ubiquitous PlayStation system, introduced in 1994 -- or even those of the Xbox -- may be numbered. But with changing delivery systems, the spreading cloud, and processor advances, those PlayStations and Wiis may be going the way of the Walkman. First, it is now possible to port plain old Android games, purchased for anywhere between free and five bucks, from your rooted phone to a Google TV box hooked up to your television through a technique called "side-loading."

Online game service OnLive is bringing its cloud magic to smartphones and tablets. The pioneer in cloud-based gaming has introduced a free app that allows gamers to play console-style games on their smartphones and tablets. Although the application was announced Thursday, when it appears in app stores will vary. For example, a quick check of the Apple App Store Thursday revealed that the app hadn't appeared there yet. In addition to being able to play OnLive games on a WiFi network, users will be able to play them on 4G LTE networks.

The next generation of Microsoft's Kinect input device may be able to read users' lips and emotions. The forthcoming device, which is expected to come bundled with Xbox consoles, reportedly will not just sense motions the way the current Kinect generation does, but will also allow games to read lips, recognize which way players are facing, and detect when they are angry. To assess players' emotional states, Kinect 2 may track their facial characteristics, as well as the pitch and volume of their voices.

Microsoft is partnering with two of the most visible players in the education industry -- Sesame Workshop and National Geographic -- to roll out a series of new "edutainment" video games for its Xbox 360 platform. The games -- "Kinect Sesame Street TV," "Kinect Nat Geo TV" and the code-named "Project Columbia" -- let children interact with characters on screen, taking advantage of the Kinect motion camera accessory. The young viewers can, for example, sing or count along with Elmo and Cookie Monster on "Sesame Street" with Kinect's full-body and voice recognition.

Once considered the red-headed stepchild of the gaming industry, social gaming is finally taking its rightful place at the table. The free-to-play model has surged to the forefront of next-generation gaming, while console game companies and traditional game developers have faltered by the wayside. With its risk-free adoption, discoverability, and virtual goods format, the F2P model demonstrates how billions of smaller transactions, coupled with lower costs and data-driven design, offer compelling game experiences to a market segment the traditional gaming companies persistently ignored.

Nintendo unveiled its upcoming Wii U gaming console and controller on Tuesday at E3, and reactions have been mixed. Nintendo's stock fell 5 percent following the event -- to a level it has not seen since before the launch of the original Wii. The controversy-generating Wii U controller has a 6.2 inch touchscreen and wields twin circle pads, a D-pad, shoulder buttons, twin triggers, an accelerometer, microphone, camera and a gyroscope. Nintendo has not yet revealed many details or pricing for the console itself, which is set to ship in 2012.

Nintendo unveiled a new touchscreen controller for its upcoming Wii U gaming console at an E3 presentation Tuesday that was hosted by Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto, President Satoru Iwata, and Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. The new Wii U controller includes a microphone, face and trigger buttons, speakers, a gyroscope, a rumble feature and an inward-facing camera. Images are generated by the Wii U console and transferred to the handheld screen controller, which means playing away from the console is not possible. The console will make its debut in 2012.

Many popular video games get a lot of bad publicity for their seeming emphasis on violence and the random techno-barbarism of advanced warfare. But there does exist true humanity at the heart of video games. The basic elements that make most video games fun and engaging involve game "mechanics" that prompt a corresponding "dynamic": Points/credits = reward; levels = influence and status; challenges = achievement; leaderboards = competition; virtual goods = self-expression.

Hackers have reportedly hit the PlayStation Network again, sneaking in another attack just days after Sony brought its video game network back online following its weeks-long outage -- which itself resulted from an attack last month. This time, hackers can apparently change users' passwords on the network using only their victims' account email address and their date of birth. Sony asked users to reset passwords after the PSN network was first infiltrated. Personal information on up to 100 million customers had apparently been compromised.

Ludology or narratology? These are the two generally accepted approaches to thinking about games. Though not incompatible, these two branches of knowledge nonetheless contend for pre-eminence among video game designer priorities. The first emphasizes play, the second story. In literary theory, narratology is the study of narrative structure -- it looks to amuse, instruct or entertain, and so is designed for us to take in. Ludology is rooted in the Latin word "ludus," meaning "game." It is the academic study of games, particularly video games.

Gabe Zichermann may have coined the term "funware" to describe applications with game-like mechanics and game-like behavior that really aren't traditional video games, but his neologism just may be expanding to encompass much more than initially intended -- the extraordinary paroxysm of technological advances currently convulsing the gaming industry. Zichermann, the head of GamificationCo, chair of the Gamification Summit and Workshops and co-author of the book Game-Based Marketing, might have to share a concept that seems to have outgrown its original meaning.

Five years after Nintendo launched the now-legendary Wii, the company's rumored to have its successor -- the Wii 2 -- in the wings. Hearsay abound about the Wii 2, which is expected to be unveiled at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, better known as E3, to be held in Los Angeles in June. A sampling of the choicest scuttlebutt: The Wii 2's going to have a really powerful processor, making it more muscular than either the PlayStation 3 or the Xbox 360; it'll have a mini-touchscreen with high-definition graphics capabilities; and that it will be backwards compatible with the original Wii.

The October release of Electronic Arts' "Rock Band 3" turned a lot of heads with its so-called Pro guitar controller that looks and feels more like a real guitar than any previous title in the series. But now another publisher, Ubisoft, is taking things a step further, having just revealed an upcoming game called "Rocksmith" that will actually let players plug in a real guitar to play along. The game will come with a special USB cable that connects to the quarter-inch jack slot found in any electric guitar. Other than that, few of the game's details have been disclosed, but that hasn't prevented speculation from flowing freely.

Guinness World Records has just announced that Microsoft's Kinect is the fastest-selling electronics device ever. In its first 60 days on the market, more than 8 million of the Xbox 360 accessory units were sold, and to date that number has eclipsed 10 million. With this many Kinects installed around the world, it's now pretty clear it's a viable platform for developers to look into. Although estimated game sales have also surpassed the 10 million mark, as of now, it seems few of the games built for the motion controller address a hardcore gaming audience.

Every year, hordes of video game professionals and wannabe industry insiders flock to San Francisco for the Game Developers Conference. It's usually more focused on the professional, business side of the industry, but even though it's not filled with the glitz and glamor of some of the industry's other big trade shows, it's a good early indicator of what will be big for the rest of the year. This time around, portable gaming -- dedicated gameplay devices and smartphones -- seemed to be the trendsetter.

Epic Games has created award-winning series like "Gears of War" and "Unreal Tournament," as well as a popular proprietary development platform. That platform, Unreal Engine, doesn't only appear in Epic titles, though. The company has allowed other developers to license it -- for a fee. Now, it's opening up that platform to independent developers with no upfront cost. Unreal Engine has been used by some of the top developers in the industry, but Epic has been on a mission lately to expand its reach.

Sony doesn't like it when gamers mess with its products. The company's stance against PS3 hacking -- users altering the machine's programming to make it perform functions other than playing games -- continues to grow stronger, as Sony pulls out the legal guns and shows no signs of backing down. When it comes to consumer electronics, unauthorized hacking and pirating seem like unavoidable hassles. Every product appears to get cracked eventually. According to a new rumor, though, Sony is working on a way to prevent it altogether.

The gaming world was still waiting to hear more details about Sony's Next Generation Portable, the successor to its current PlayStation Portable handheld gaming system, when all of the sudden the company up and confirmed another rumored gaming device. The Xperia Play looks to be the official name of what many had already dubbed the "PlayStation phone." The name raises the question of whether Sony is shying away from its powerful video game brand name. Indeed, many questions are left open from Sony's minimalistic reveal.

When it comes to controversial, violent video games, Rockstar is king. "Grand Theft Auto" put the company on the map, and it hasn't looked back since. It has become one of the most talked-about publishers in the industry and continues to push the envelope. But its latest game, while still containing a lot of sex and violence, puts players in a very different perspective. Rockstar announced "LA Noire" more than three years ago but until now, details about the game's exact plot and gameplay mechanics remained sketchy.

Frantic parents concerned about their children's digital habits have found a new ally in the form of a study published in the latest issue of the journal Pediatrics. Roughly 10 percent of young video gamers suffer a pathological addiction to their games, the researchers found. "We aimed to measure the prevalence and length of the problem of pathological video gaming or Internet use, to identify risk and protective factors, and to identify outcomes for individuals who become or stop being pathological gamers," explained study co-author Albert Liau, Ph.D.

Ever since Microsoft's new Kinect motion controller for the Xbox 360 launched in November, we've seen gamers put it to use as everything from an artistic creation tool to an environmentally aware hovercraft. However, this latest hack may just take the cake. There's a Japanese website called V-Sido, which lets users connect a robot to an online interface and then control the robot from the Web. This latest Kinect hacker has managed to use the Xbox motion camera as a means of sending data to V-Sido, effectively mirroring human movement onto real-life robots.

"Avatar" movie director James Cameron couldn't have scripted a better keynote speech for Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Wednesday that Kinect and Xbox will connect with consumers via avatars, transporting Xbox Live Gold subscribers into the chatty, motion-savvy, virtual world of Avatar Kinect. We will make entertainment more interactive, more social, and more fun for everyone, and we'll do it like no one else can," said Ballmer, speaking on-screen as a slendered-down avatar version of himself.

The 3DS is a portable video game system capable of displaying 3D games without the use of special glasses. However, the warning urges parents to use the 2D feature of the device instead if their kids are less than six years old. Nintendo isn't the first company to issue a health warning about 3D-related technologies.

OnLive has created an adapter that brings its cloud-based, instant-play video games to the TV -- and it's hoping to attract the whole family, not just the hardcore male gamer, to partake in the action. OnLive is taking orders now for its MicroConsole and an accompanying OnLive Wireless Controller. The $99 bundle, which includes any free game from the company's collection of 35, will begin shipping on December 2. The console is not much larger than a VHS cassette, since all the technology is in the cloud.

Microsoft's Kinect game device has been flying off retailers' shelves since its release Thursday, according to reports. So far, some users have been impressed with the video game device's ability to track a player's body movement, while others have discovered problems with it. The Kinect for Xbox 360 incorporates sophisticated sound and motion detector technology so consumers can use their voices and hands-free motion to play games and watch entertainment programs on it. There are 17 Kinect games available this holiday season.

The auditorium darkens, the audience members put on their 3-D glasses, and a screen fills up with point-of-view images of sci-fi warfare -- futuristic soldiers leaping from one military platform to another in special weaponized jetpacks, raining death and destruction. A scene from a potential sequel to James Cameron's "Avatar?" No, just another attempt to take that blockbuster film's success and translate it into another medium -- this time video games. The sequence from the forthcoming "Killzone 3" game was used to highlight Sony's 3-D strategy for its PlayStation 3 console.

Nintendo unveiled its highly anticipated 3DS portable game console Tuesday at the Electronic Entertainment Expo. The 3DS offers 3-D viewing without the need for special glasses. Nintendo also announced remakes of several of its popular older games for the Wii platform. The Nintendo 3DS has two stacked vertically screens. The top one is a 3.5-inch 3-D display; the bottom one is a touch panel. Players can adjust the depth of the 3-D effect using a slider on top of the 3DS. The 3DS has two cameras on the back to snap 3-D digital pictures, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata said.
