Yahoo is announcing a new online advertising tool

Yahoo is set to unveil several tools on Tuesday to help marketers better target their online adverts, as the Internet company tries to win back business during a recession, the Wall Street Journal said, citing senior company officials.

Yahoo, the leading provider of online display advertising, has been under pressure for nearly a year as it held fruitless merger or partnership talks with Microsoft Corp, Google Inc and Time Warner Inc’s AOL.

The new services include targeting graphical adverts to users who have searched for particular terms in Yahoo’s search engine and customizing the offers in adverts based on what websites a consumer has visited and what they have done on those sites, the paper said.

Another service that is expected to go live next month will allow marketers to buy text adverts next to search results that are targeted to users during a certain time of day or based on factors such as their age and gender, according to the paper.

“Targeting a site with a couple hundred thousand users…I don’t call that targeting. I call that wasted effort,” the paper quoted Joanne Bradford, Yahoo’s senior vice president of U.S. revenue and market development, as saying. “Size does matter.”

Bradford and Michael Walrath, a senior vice president at Yahoo, will discuss the new features during a keynote address at a conference in Orlando, Florida, on Tuesday, the paper said.

They will also use the speech to urge marketers to stop thinking about search and display advertising as separate products and to take advantage of tools such as Yahoo’s search-targeting product to bridge the two, the pair told the paper in a joint interview.

Skype and Nokia decides de partner and integrate Skype into Nokia devices.

Skype and Nokia today announced a partnership that will bring the world’s leading Internet communications experience to the Nokia range of mobile computers. Under the terms of the cooperation, Skype™ will be integrated into Nokia devices, starting with the Nokia Nseries. The Nokia N97 flagship device will be the first to incorporate the Skype experience in the 3rd quarter of 2009.

The Skype experience will be part of the address book of the Nokia N97, enabling presence – seeing when Skype contacts are online – as well as instant messaging. Nokia N97 owners around the world will also be able to use 3G and WLAN to easily make and receive free Skype-to-Skype voice calls, in addition to low-cost Skype calls to landlines and mobile devices.“Making Skype available everywhere through mobile devices is essential to fulfilling our vision of ‘enabling the world’s conversations’,” said Scott Durchslag, Skype’s Chief Operating Officer. “Collaborating closely with Nokia to preload and integrate our software onto their devices will benefit the many Nokia customers who already use Skype, as it makes Skype easily accessible and simple to use on the go. It will also bring Skype new users who love Nokia’s Symbian S60 experience.”

“With more than 400 million Skype users worldwide, the integration of Skype on Nokia Nseries mobile computers is a significant step in bringing converged Internet experiences from the desktop to the world’s most advanced mobile computer,” said Jose-Luis Martinez, Vice President, Nokia Nseries.

Truphone, the mobile VoIP service, today integrated AOL® Instant Messenger® (AIM™) into its Apple iPhone™ and iPodTM touch applications. Now customers on both devices can use Truphone to also instant message their AIM friends via their AIM identity.

Truphone has already integrated Google Talk™, Skype™, Windows Live Messenger™ and Yahoo! ® Messenger into its applications for these devices, blending voice and IM across multiple platforms, and reaching over 800 million addressable accounts for free.

“Our goal is for mobile phone users to be able to reach any contact on their buddy lists, at any time and at no cost, using just one application,” said Geraldine Wilson, Truphone CEO. “We will keep integrating more services and functionality, on other platforms too, giving people everything they need to stay in touch, all within the Truphone application.”

When not in Wi-Fi range, iPhone users can still exchange calls and messages with Skype and Google Talk users for the cost of a local call*, using the Truphone Anywhere feature. Voice calling will be added to AOL IM, Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger within months.

In a separate development, Truphone today began accepting PayPal credit as a method of prepayment for calls out of its network. This addition makes it easy for people without major credit or debit cards to benefit from Truphone’s low calling rates to over 200 countries.

Said Wilson: “With PayPal we found not only a payment processing service, but also an addressable community that matched up very nicely to the typical Truphone customer.”

Customers may refill credit to their Truphone accounts via handheld, web site, or phone. They can also choose to automatically top up when credit has fallen to a specified level.
